Honoring Your Mother and Father

  • As a son or daughter/product of the COG, what does it look like to honor your mother and father (Eph 6:2)?
  • How do you balance a call to fully re-embrace the mission of Jesus with a call to honor those who are over you in the Lord (1 Thes 5:11-24)?
  • As we pray and work for a mission obsessed direction for our fellowship and a departure from an increasing administrative focus, how do we balance the call of Jesus to “Go” (Mat 28:19-20) with the call to the Church at Thessolonica to honor?

If we fail to strike a healthy, Biblical balance, we will certainly fail to affect any significant change. What are your thoughts?

One Response

  1. A few thoughts:

    1. Always honoring and obeying Christ 1st
    – This is the godly heritage our parents should desire for us
    – Never responding out of fear
    – Never submitting to or functioning in intimidation or manipulation

    2. Always in humility, speak the truth in love

    3. Always acting in love

    4. We honor our mother and father by not putting them in the place of God
    – Idolatry is subtle and seductive.
    – It is rewarded by a system that is focused on its own survival

    5. We honor our mother and father when we only fear the Lord
    – I heard it said in Seminary that “what we fear the most determines what we worship” and it is true! It is only in God where perfect love and holy fear come together.

Jesus illustrates this truth in Matthew 10:28-31
“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

Here Jesus is not talking about mere respect but true fear. The rest of this section of scripture reinforces how much God loves and cares for us. Perfect love does not drive out the Fear of the Lord! It drives out the fear of man and this world.

The syntheses of these two apparent opposites are essential for us to accept and submit to if we are to honor God and our mother and father (Notice I did not say we had to fully comprehend this truth).

    6. Finally, we should stay in the family.
    – God hates divorce. When we do our best to live the above mentioned points we are vulnerable and some will see weakness, attack and we will get hurt.

    – We must walk by faith and trust God to be our defender

    – Know that Christ promised persecution if we are to follow Him & expect it from other Christians not just the world.

    – Reject the erroneous pop theology that proposes “If it was God’s will everything would be going smoothly or as planned.”

    – We all, like Christ, are wounded healers. The easy road, and sometimes the better financial decision, is to quit and leave. The hard road is to stay to the end and love no mater the cost.
